There are two routes to becoming qualified as a Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN); either through vocational (college) training or via a higher education (university degree) qualification. Both routes lead to registration as a veterinary nurse with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS). More information can be found here.
We are currently accepting applications from degree student veterinary nurses at Abbey House – here’s some more information about what a placement might look like for you at our practice.
Degree student nurses experience
We are happy to accept student nurses from any stage in their study, but we like to have 1st year students and take them right from the beginning of their training to the end.
Opportunities available for student nurses and working hours
Student placements are at the Morley site of Abbey House Veterinary Hospital only. SVN’s will have opportunities in all departments (reception, dispensary, surgical, medical, practice nurse). Candidates must be ready to join a 1:4 weekend rota (with a day off given in lieu the week before and after) as well as a 40hr working rota with a variety of days with shifts ranging from 8am to 8pm.
What we expect from our student nurses and what they can expect in return
Our practice is equipped with hospital wards (kennels, isolation, exotics, cattery), two prep areas, four operating theatres including orthopaedic, soft tissue, ophthalmic referrals, a specialised dental unit, advanced imaging including x-ray, CT and visiting MRI, and on-site 24/7 emergency care.
The chosen individual must be able to handle large caseloads and work in a busy, fast-paced hospital. It is necessary to have at least 3 weeks of prior veterinary practise experience, and this experience should be able to demonstrate a diverse skill set.
Successful candidates will be assigned a 1:1 clinical coach who will offer weekly tutorials and progression plans to make sure they reach the desired placement goals. The knowledge acquired during a year working in a referral and emergency veterinary hospital will be invaluable for future employment opportunities.
Travel and accommodation
Applicants must have a car and a valid driving licence in order to attend placement. There are public transport links but can be unreliable. We are unfortunately not able to provide any accommodation.
Are there any accessibility considerations that I might need to take into account at your practice?
We have a lift for those who need it. It is a fast-paced site however so those with mobility issues could struggle to keep up, but otherwise, access should be fine. There is a staff room for breaks.
