Is my pet at risk from obesity?
There are factors such as age, breed and gender that are beyond our control but can increase the risk of obesity in your pet. Excess weight is an intake of too may calories without then burning them off thorugh exercise. Overweight animals are more susceptible to conditions such as arthritis, diabetes, heart problems or breathing difficulties. Is my pet overweight?
As a pet owner, it is important to understand when your pet is carrying extra weight. As a rule of thumb, when you pick up your pet, you should be able to feel thier ribs; if you can't or are unsure, bring your pet in to see a member of our expert team who will advise accordingly.
What exercise should my pet be doing?
Exercise and activities should be based upon the age, gender and breed of your pet as well as their current physical abilities. What happens during a weight consultation appointment?
Our expert vet or veterinary nurse will gather your pets history from you and perform a comprehensive clinical examination. Your pet will be weighed and receive a body condition score. Dependant upon these results, we will make our recommendations to you. Should any further medical conditions be suspected, further tests (blood tests) may be advised. If not, exercise and dietary advice will be given to help your pet get back to a healthy weight.
