  • Cocker Spaniel makes full recovery after thorn stuck in her paw!

A dog suffering from ongoing lameness has a spring in her step once again after Abbey House Vets found the cause of her swollen foot.

Madge, a nine-year-old Cocker Spaniel, had undergone various treatments, including antibiotics and anti-inflammatories, before vets at Linnaeus-owned Abbey House Veterinary Practice in Morley found her discomfort was being caused by a thorn she had stepped on.

Veterinary surgeon James Baker performed a CT scan under general anaesthetic to find the foreign body stuck in the underside of Masie’s front left foot.

James said: “A thorn in a dog’s pad can be very painful and make life a misery for them. Madge’s thorn had swollen her foot leaving her lame, so we were very pleased to diagnose and treat her. Madge continues to do well and her foot is healing nicely.”

Madge’s relieved owner Nadine Owen from Leeds said: “We noticed Madge had been licking her front paw and leg, and saw she had a very raw ulcerated patch.

“She was prescribed some antibiotics to reduce the infection, it got much better but still would not heal.

“It was thought from another consultation she may have a grass seed or thorn in her paw, unfortunately a first operation found nothing.

“Madge then went for a CT scan and, thankfully, a large piece of thorn was removed."
