Written Prescriptions

  • You may obtain Prescription Only Medicines (POM Vs) from your veterinary surgeon OR you may ask for a written prescription in order to obtain these medicines from another veterinary surgeon or pharmacy.
  • Your veterinary surgeon may prescribe POM Vs only for animals under his / her care.
  • A prescription may not be appropriate if your animal is an in-patient or immediate treatment is necessary.
  • You will be informed, on request, of the price of any medicine that may be prescribed for your animal.
  • The general policy of this practice is, to reassess animals requiring repeat prescriptions, every 6 months, but this may vary with individual circumstances.
  • The standard charge for re–examination is £23.99 (including VAT).

Prices are subject to change.

  • Further information on the prices of medicines is available on request.

Due to increased demand for written prescriptions we are finding that they are taking more of the veterinary surgeons time.  Therefore the protocol for written prescriptions is as follows:

  • We can NO LONGER accept or complete pre-printed blank internet prescription forms
  • There can only be ONE medication per written prescription
  • A charge of £8.84 plus VAT = (£ 10.61) will be made for the first prescription item.
  •  Clients requesting written prescriptions for any additional medication at the same time, will be charged at £4.42 plus VAT = (£5.30) per item.

 Prices are subject to change.

  • All animals will have to be seen at regular intervals and re examination intervals will be set the by the veterinary surgeon and will depend on the medical condition and status of the animal.
  • 24 hours must be allowed from requesting a written prescription to collection.

It is important to note that under current legislation certain schedules need to be followed.   Substitution of a different medication for a named authorised and licensed veterinary medication may be illegal.  Abbey House Veterinary Hospital / Clinic accepts no responsibility for the safety, withdrawal periods, or efficacy of any substituted medications nor any liability for losses however sustained.  All such liabilities rest exclusively with the pharmacist / authorised dispenser.  Our veterinary surgeons will use their knowledge to decide on the best medication for their patient.   They will consider that patient’s condition and any drug reactions and concurrent disease.  They will also make detailed notes in the patient’s clinical records and finally they will write out the prescription.
